Accessibility is a Priority at West Midland Family Center
Walking through the doors of West Midland Family Center, one thing becomes clear right away: this is a place designed with people in mind. From families with young children to older adults, from individuals with disabilities to those navigating sensory or emotional needs, the Family Center is intentionally built to be a space where everyone feels welcome, supported, and able to participate fully.
Accessibility is not an add-on at West Midland Family Center. It is part of the foundation. The building offers level, no-step entrances and automatic doors, along with accessible and van-accessible parking that makes arriving easier from the start. Inside, wide hallways and doorways allow for comfortable movement throughout the facility, and restrooms are thoughtfully designed with accessible stalls and support bars.
For individuals and families who need additional support, the Center offers private, individual shower rooms, an adult-sized changing table with a lift system in a dedicated Changing Space, and a no-step entry swimming pool that allows for inclusive recreation and programming. Visual contrast and icon-based signage help visitors navigate the space with confidence, while multiple quiet areas throughout the building provide opportunities to step away and reset when needed.
Children’s programs are designed with predictability and care, incorporating visual schedules and consistent routines that help young participants feel safe and supported. Adaptive recreational equipment is available, service animals are always welcome, and a private Mother’s Room offers a comfortable space for nursing parents and caregivers.
Behind the scenes, West Midland Family Center staff receive training in neurodiversity awareness and trauma-informed care, reinforcing the Center’s clear inclusion and non-discrimination policies. Together, these efforts reflect a commitment not just to physical accessibility, but to emotional and social belonging as well.
West Midland Family Center is proud of the steps it has taken to create a more inclusive environment, and the work does not stop here. Community members are invited to share feedback and ideas as the Center continues striving to be a place where everyone, regardless of age, ability, or need, feels seen, valued, and at home.
