Back to Kindergarten: Helping Midland County Families Transition to School
The Midland County Kindergarten Transition Team, also known as the School Readiness Advisory Committee, is a coalition dedicated to making the transition into kindergarten a positive experience for children and their families. This group brings together parents, teachers, administrators, preschool educators, special education representatives, and other community partners with one shared goal: to ensure that every child has the tools and confidence they need to thrive as they begin their educational journey.
Current initiatives include several family-centered resources. Every incoming kindergartener in Midland County receives a free book, distributed by elementary schools, to encourage early literacy and a love for reading. Families also receive the “Roadmap to Kindergarten” flyer, filled with practical tips to support children before and during the transition. Additionally, the team produces “Kindergarten Matters” books, which are customized for each school. These books introduce students to photos and names of staff members as well as pictures of common spaces, helping children feel more comfortable and familiar with their new school environment before they ever set foot in the classroom.
So far, “Kindergarten Matters” books are available for all of Midland County’s public schools, and work is underway to expand this initiative to include private school partners.
By providing these resources, the Midland County Kindergarten Transition Team supports families during one of the most important milestones in a child’s life. Their efforts directly align with the Midland County Vision by fostering a strong start for young learners, helping families feel prepared, and ensuring that children can thrive as they step into kindergarten and beyond.
