MBA Business Spotlight: Sean Haney of Dow Credit Union

This spotlight series is from The Midland Business Alliance.

The Midland Business Alliance is continuing their spotlight series, introducing the remarkable individuals behind Midland’s businesses. This time they sat down with Sean Haney, Mortgage Loan Officer at Dow Credit Union. Sean’s story is uniquely rooted in the Midland community—his credit union journey began long before he joined the team professionally.

“I started my journey with Dow Credit Union at six months old,” Sean laughed. “My parents moved to Midland and opened an account for me. I’ve banked here my entire life.” Years later, when Sean was looking for a career change while expecting his first child, it felt natural to apply. “I was mowing the lawn when HR called me for an interview. I was working retail and had always been in sales, but I was looking for something bigger. This place was home.”

Sean began as a part-time teller and steadily advanced through the organization—training others, working in mortgage processing, and eventually becoming a full-time mortgage loan officer. Now with 13 years under his belt, he says, “I’m in my stride.” But what stands out most to him isn’t just career growth—it’s how his work reflects the values of the credit union and the community.

“Dow Credit Union is more than a financial institution,” Sean explained. “It’s a multiplier for good.” From flood recovery loans to facilitating community repair programs through partnerships like the one with Habitat for Humanity and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, Sean is proud to help channel resources where they’re needed most. “We act as a conduit—connecting people with the funding and support they might not even know exists.”

Sean is especially excited about the credit union’s newest developments, including the launch of small business lending and expanding commercial services. “This community has evolved, and so have we. We’re now offering open membership across Michigan and rolling out business support tools for local entrepreneurs.”

Sean’s role also allows him to do what he loves most: educate. “I value community education—whether it’s understanding mortgage rates, credit scores, or financial tools, I want to help people make informed decisions. I want to be that guy they can turn to and trust.”

When he’s not helping members navigate the home buying process, Sean stays connected through groups like MYPros. “I love seeing Midland grow. Ten years ago, there weren’t as many outlets for young professionals. Now, we’re seeing a real ecosystem forming—people collaborating, referring each other, supporting new businesses. It’s exciting.”

Sean’s story is a testament to what’s possible when personal values align with professional purpose—and how a familiar hometown institution can become a platform for community transformation.
