Midland Area Community Foundation Accepting Scholarship Applications and Recruiting Volunteer Reviewers

The Midland Area Community Foundation is accepting scholarship applications online through January 31 at midlandfoundation.org/scholarships. Thanks to the generosity of local donors, more than $900,000 in scholarship funding is available to support students pursuing education and training opportunities.

Scholarships are open to high school seniors, current college students, and adults returning to school. Most scholarships are available to residents of Midland County, with a limited number also open to residents of Gladwin County.

This year’s application process is easier than ever. Students complete one universal application and are automatically matched with the scholarships for which they qualify.

Key scholarship facts include:

  • More than 250 scholarships will be awarded in 2026.

  • Since 1978, the Foundation has awarded over $8.5 million in scholarships to local students.

  • Scholarship funds are established by individuals, families, businesses, and organizations that are committed to investing in education and promoting long-term community vitality.

“Building permanent community capital through investment in education is one of the many important functions of a community foundation,” said Sharon Mortensen, President and CEO of the Midland Area Community Foundation. “Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of donors, we awarded almost $1 million in scholarships last year. We’re looking forward to continuing to build that impact this year.”

The impact of the Foundation’s scholarship program in 2025 included:

  • 692 complete applications received

  • 382 scholarships awarded

  • 262 students supported

  • $980,560 distributed in scholarship funding

In addition to encouraging applications, the Midland Area Community Foundation is also seeking volunteers to serve as scholarship reviewers. Volunteer reviewers play a vital role in ensuring scholarships are awarded thoughtfully and equitably, following donor intent while supporting local students.

“Our ability to sponsor more than 250 scholarships would not be possible without the dedication of our volunteer reviewers,” said Heather Crowl, the Community Foundation’s Scholarship Coordinator and Impact Assistant. “Reviewing scholarships is a meaningful and rewarding way to give back to the community and directly support the next generation.”

Individuals interested in serving as a scholarship reviewer are encouraged to contact Heather at hcrowl@midlandfoundation.org for more information.

All applicants must apply online at www.midlandfoundation.org/scholarships. For details or assistance completing the application, contact the Midland Area Community Foundation at 989-839-9661.
